Home ownership provides a tax haven

It’s tax season again and thoughts of home ownership weigh heavily on the minds of renters and other prospective homebuyers. Renters are often apprehensive about the financial responsibility of owning a home. The professionals at Coldwell Banker® want to remind taxpayers that ownership, rather than renting, offers financial benefits. Below are tax incentives for home ownership, but as always, taxpayers should seek the advice of a financial professional:

•Deductible property taxes and interest. Most homeowners can deduct property taxes and interest paid on their mortgage for each year of ownership.
•Borrowing against equity. Homeowners can borrow against the equity they have built up in their homes. Equity from a home can be used to improve the property, buy a car or pay for education.
•Real estate tax exemption. Depending on the state, certain real estate tax exemptions apply for homeowners who meet specific criteria.
•Yearly home appreciation. Although it is not a tax advantage, homes build equity over time. Renters receive no financial return on monthly rental costs.

Reedville on the Northern Neck of Virginia (between the Potomac and Rappahanncok Rivers) is a fisherman's town. Reedville is home to a thriving menhaden commercial fishing industry. Several sport fishing charters are available for the recreational fisherman. Each year, the town plays host to the Reedville Bluefish Derby. This fishing tournament, held in mid-June, features cash prizes in excess of $125,000.

The Reedville Fishermen's Museum is located in the center of the town's historic district. The museum has a nice collection of traditional Chesapeake Bay work boats. While at the museum, pick up a copy of the Reedville Walking Tour brochure. The tour describes the turn-of-the-century Victorian homes which line Main Street. The museum currently has a special exhibit documenting the history and restoration of three Chesapeake Bay skipjacks. The exhibit, entitled Skipjack Sunday, will be on display through August of 2002. You can view recently discovered photographs of Chesapeake Bay Skipjacks at the Skipjack Sunday website. Prints of the photos are also available for purchase through the website.

Diamond is always up to any challenge and when I asked her to write her thoughts of our area, she wrote this in 15 minutes.

Hi, my name is Diamond Harris and I am a friend of Becky’s. I came from a small town in New York named Mt. Vernon. I usually visit my grandparents In Virginia for the summer and enjoy my vacation. Later on they had decided to open a store named “The Country Store.” Ever since my grandparents Joann Kirmil and Jerry Kirmil opened up we have had many customers. Becky walked in and we automatically click, it was a quick friendship. We have had many adventures, like time I went out on a boat for the fist time! I was scared out of my brains but I liked it. Then she took me out to fish, and showed me her crab pots, a crab almost snapped my toe off but I am ok.

Becky asked me to write about what I thought of the Northern Neck for her Blog. So I would like to explain to you why Northern Neck is such a nice place.

Personally, I like the fact that it is very quiet around. Usually, living in the City, I am used to loud noises but then it’s hard to sleep. And that is why I recommend you to stay in Northern Neck, it is clean. We have cleaning crews to clean every now and then and we are all nice neighbors to anyone, we welcome all newcomers. Northern Neck is like a family, in fact, we are. We all live together with respect for others privacy, opinions and space. We all care for each other and all have hearts. So I say yes! I have been coming here for 4 years and this is the best place to live, so if you believe in peace and beauty, you should live here, because we are a family and there is always more space for others.

This is me as a kid.

I love the water. I have been a water rat from day one. I suppose the more things change the more they stay the same. This is me today, same water, different dog! I miss Spot!

I love it here on the Northern Neck Of Virgina.... It's part of me, and I am proud to say I am part of it. I hope you enjoy reading about all the things that make this the most special place on earth.
